Google in an interview saidthat it wasn’t giving out the source code to Android 3.0 for well after the launch. Engineering VP Andy Rubin claimed to BusinessWeek that it could be months away as the code had been rushed to make the Xoom launch date. The design was optimized almost exclusively for tablets and would likely work very poorly on phones, but with few controls to developers to prevent them from working it in
“We didn’t want to think about what it would take for the same software to run on phones,” he explained. “It would have required a lot of More >

In an interview with TechCrunch, HP executive VP of the Personal Systems Group Todd Bradley revealed a few strategies of the division as it relates to tablets. Because he estimates that the tablet market will eventually be worth more than $ 40 billion, the division will focus on developing the webOS software for mobile devices, growing its app market and improving the interface. HP now owns webOS after purchasing Palm earlier this year, and Bradley said the software platform was the driving force behind HP’s decision.

Verizon at its developer conference tried to downplay concerns that its upcoming V CAST Apps mobile app store wouldn’t undermine Android Market. The network’s consumer product VP Greg Haller insisted the carrier-run store wouldn’t block Android Market, other stores, or even direct downloads through the browser. He instead portrayed it a way of possibly improving the experience if developers feel they’ll have better success than elsewhere.
“V CAST Apps is not out to take over your phone,” Haller said. “Its not about preventing other app stores, or preventing apps to be downloaded through the browser or other means; this is More >

Verizon set out a major obstacle to Windows Phone 7′s adoption today as it revealed that it won’t have a Windows Phone 7 device on launch. Carrier spokeswoman Brenda Raney told Bloomberg that there would be no WP7 device at all on Verizon in 2010 and that there would “probably” be a model in 2011. She stressed that the death of the Kin hadn’t soured the relationship, which was still “solid.”
The blow isn’t necessarily fatal to Microsoft as Apple, HTC, Motorola and RIM have all had exclusives to varying degrees. It may nonetheless limit the potential reach as Microsoft’s smartphone More >
Sprint: Epic 4G “one of” our best launches, won’t give data
Sep 5th
Sprint today said that its launch of the Samsung Epic 4G was “one of the best” first-day releases in its history. The carrier wouldn’t provide figures but hinted it was prepared for the possibility of sellouts. The record came in spite of a higher $ 250 contract price.
The company has often been reluctant to provide data, but it’s likely the device’s results won’t compare to the HTC Evo 4G that has been hailed as Sprint’s turnaround device. Reports from various users still suggest no shortages of the Epic 4G, which is still available online; the Evo 4G sold out More >
