Microsoft’s largely mysterious Menlo project has been caught running through a newly discovered research paper (PDF). A 4.1-inch, capacitive touch prototype said to be Menlo, although also identified as using Windows Embedded CE 6.0 R2, has been used to show an example of an app codenamed Greenfield that would use an accelerometer, a barometer and more to provide in-building navigation. What’s special about Menlo isn’t detailed, but the app would give directions involving stairs and elevators rather than just 2D positioning.

One of HTC’s Windows Phone 7 devices has finally been spotted today in a leak tonight from an anonymous source. The smartphone is typical of HTC’s current hardware with a 1GHz processor and an eight-megapixel camera, and is using a 3.7-inch Sony Super LCD in place of the now scarce AMOLED screen. As HTC had warned, Engadget notes, the phone isn’t using any traditional instance of Sense UI that could be seen.

A late-breaking scoop from within Microsoft has revealed that the company is close to cutting jobs as soon as Wednesday. The headcount lost isn’t known but wouldn’t be as large-scale as with the over 5,800 jobs cut at the lowest point of last year’s economic crash. They come after the end of Microsoft’s fiscal year in June and would partly reflect a shift in product focus.

LG pledged itself to Android in major fashion today by unveiling several Android devices at once. It started by teasing the development of an Android-based tablet. What features it would have weren’t mentioned, but it would ship sometime in the fall.
The Android phone lineup is also expanding soon with a trio of new Android phones.
