Windows 8 to get overhauled task manager

The latest Windows 8 feature to slip through developer non-disclosure agreements is a newly discovered task manager overhaul. The new-look interface of the Advanced Task Manager gives much more detailed information about the running processes, services and the way these are being utilized by the systems resources. The second of the embedded images below demonstrates how Microsoft is also attempting to make Windows 8 more touchscreen/tablet friendly. It is designed in a way that allows a user to quickly shut down processes with a quick touch gesture.

Gigabyte’s S1080 dual-core Windows tablet ships to Taiwan

Gigabyte has started taking orders for its S108 dual-core 1.66Ghz Atom-powered Windows 7 tablet in Taiwan. The device has a has a 10.1-inch LED capacitive multi-touch panel with a resolution of 1024×600 pixels. It comes standard with 2GB of DDR3 RAM and utilizes Intels GMA 3150 integrated graphics, while it features one USB 3.0 port in its array to deliver high-speed connectivity.

Windows 7 just overtakes XP as top OS in the US

Windows 7 has just overtaken Windows XP as the top operating system in the US, according to the latest stats from StatCounter. As of April 7, the newer OS reached a 31.71 percent of share, while Windows XP is only slightly behind, at 31.56 percent. The data was collected using visitor stats from over three million websites and should theoretically cover a large enough swath to represent real share.
In comparison, Windows Vista, which came after XP and before Windows 7, never beat out the older OS. Since launching in October of 2009, Windows 7 enjoyed a steady increase.

Windows 8′s SmartScreen to build on Apple’s file screening

Among the additions coming to Windows 8 should be an Apple-like file checking system that would refuse to run files known or suspected to be rogue. Microsoft’s SmartScreen, a system first found in Internet Explorer and Windows Live Messenger, will check files for whether they’re malware or otherwise illegal and could stop them from running. The method would prevent ‘social’ viruses, where users end up bypassing their usual safeguards because they think it comes from a known source.

Dell’s Windows 7 tablet pushed to fall, Windows 8 next year

Dell’s hinted at said Monday that it wouldn’t arrive until the fall, or September at best. The reasons weren’t mentioned to Forbes, but Dell’s decision to relegate it to enterprise meant it had little expectation of competing with the iPad or most other tablets.
The company is also believed to be readying a Windows 8 tablet. Contrary to the publication’s expectations, however, it’s unlikely to ship before late 2012. The OS is still working towards its third developer milestone and likely won’t be in an early beta until late this year, ruling out a polished release for early 2012.
