Spotify may further curb free music access this week
Apr 13th
Spotify may shrink back the amount of free listening it gives once again, insiders said Wednesday. Having already limited new members on the free plan to 20 hours of listening per month, it’s now reportedly considering locking down the number of listens per song and might also throttle back existing listeners. The company could make the changes public as soon as this week, CNET heard, although they wouldn’t take effect until May.
The reasons for the clampdown weren’t given, but it would most likely be to appease labels that want more paying customers and fewer depending on ads. Spotify has been More >
Motorola Xoom confirmed for UK first week of April
Mar 29th
Motorola has confirmed to Engadget that its Xoom tablet will begin shipping in the UK next week. Despite this, however, prices or an exact date haven’t been revealed. The Android 3.0 tablet will arrive at electronics retailers Carphone Warehouse, Currys, Dixons, and PC World.
It’s not known whether the Wi-Fi only version will ship, just the 3G model or both at the same time. The Wi-Fi model is expected to cost £500 (the equivalent of $ 800), with the 3G version coming in at £600 ($ 960), though either is yet to be confirmed.
Amazon may have cloud media locker next week
Mar 26th
Insiders said Friday night that Amazon may pip Apple and Google to unveiling a cloud media locker in the very near future. The online retailer has supposedly been talking to music labels and movie studios about storing books, music, and videos on servers so users could get to them from anywhere. It might unveil its plans as soon as next week, before all the deals have even been finalized, CNET understood.
The premature launch would be to head off any claims that it knows its rivals are likely to make soon. Apple has hinted at iTunes tie-ins to its datacenter in More >
iPad 2 lineups still hundreds long a week later
Mar 20th
Anecdotal reports from would-be iPad 2 buyers on Friday have suggested no slowdown in demand a week after the launch. Lineups at the 5th Avenue store in New York City or The Forum Shops at Caesar’s Palace in Las Vegas (pictured) are still ranging into the dozens or hundreds. One MacRumors reader noted that the line never appeared to shrink and that it was using the barriers to control the lineups and manage expectations for stock.
Much of the line includes legitimate buyers, but gray market dealers have been a significant problem. Apple’s decision to ship only in the US at More >
