HP’s TouchPad cloud music, video plans leak in presentation
Apr 17th
HP’s intention to build a webOS cloud media locker, and possibly beat Apple and Google to the feature, was given more definitive support late Friday after a leaked presentation. A pair of slides describing the TouchPad reportedly showed both the known HP Movie Store but also an intelligent, online music syncing option. PreCentral‘s copy showed that it would not only allow remotely storing and streaming music, including songs users “don’t yet own,” but would determine owners’ preferred music and prioritize it for local caching on the TouchPad itself.
The app mockup in the slide wasn’t likely to reflect the real More >
Video pro hints iPad, Thunderbolt new parts of Final Cut Pro
Apr 10th
Bunim/Murray Productions’ post-production lead Mark Raudonis gave some clues in a new revision of Final Cut Studio. Having been to a recent preview presentation at Apple’s Cupertino headquarters, he hinted that at least the Final Cut Pro part of the suite embodied the Wayne Gretzky philosophy of skating to where the puck will be and has forward-thinking hardware features. It would be designed with Thunderbolt ports in mind and even had a degree of iPad support, Raudonis said in a clip shared by Filmmaker.
The app would have a file-based workflow, Raudonis added. Apple was also reportedly very aware of More >
AT&T phasing out Video Share in wake of smartphones
Apr 9th
AT&T in a statement said its long-running Video Share service would be shut down later in 2011. The one-way video calling was bowing out to make room for the “next generation” of mobile video services. A spokesman alluded to a possible replacement as the company was “evaluating new platforms” that it could use.
Many of those paying for Video Share would be reached directly and given new options.
Video Share rolled out in earnest in July 2007 and was intended for a short-lived category of basic feature phones that had 3G and a camera capable of live video streaming. The service More >
Nikon makes D5100 official with ISO 102,400 night video
Apr 5th
Nikon tonight brought out its long planned D5100. The camera has a brand new, 180 degree variable swiveling LCD with a sharp 921,000-pixel output and a 1,000:1 contrast ratio. Video is the same 1080p30 as on the D3100 and D7000, but a sensor tweak gives it a new Night Vision mode for very low light: it can record in ISO 102,400 to get the moment when seeing the shot is more important than the amount of noise.
The camera normally shoots in an ISO 100 to 6,400 sensitivity range with an override option to hit 25,600. Beginners get a new More >
BlackBerry Touch video tutorials confirm its design
Apr 5th
A second BlackBerry phone slipped out on Monday night through a leak of tutorial videos that confirmed more of RIM’s plans. The CDMA version of the BlackBerry Touch, nicknamed the Monaco, is much as expected and has a taller screen for BlackBerry 6.1. CrackBerry‘s sighting shows software similar to that on the Bold Touch apart from the need for a touchscreen keyboard and supports multi-touch pinch to zoom, both on the web and in photos.
The Storm2 sequel should have much of the same hardware on the inside as the Bold Touch, starting from the 1.2GHz processor and moving on More >
