Toshiba upgraded its NAND flash memory Tuesday night in a possible hint at the timing and features of the iPhone 5. Its new SmartNAND is based on a dense 24 nanometer process and allows flash chips up to 64GB for “media players, tablet PCs” and other devices. Along with being more space-efficient, the new design has a better memory controller that speeds up reads and writes.
All of the chips now have their own built-in error correction to take some of the work of guaranteeing accurate date away from a given device’s main processor.
Capacities start at 4GB for the new More >

NVIDIA kicked off the IFA show in earnest by unveiling the rest of the GeForce 400M lineup. Like the GTX 480M, the series is built on the Fermi architecture and supports full DirectX 11 (and OpenGL 4) features, but now in thin-and-light notebooks. The designs should be much faster for general-purpose computing like CUDA and OpenCL, and NVIDIA claims five times better performance for the relatively basic GT 420M versus Intel’s current Core iX integrated video.
The line includes two particularly high-end chips destined for desktop replacement notebooks and other larger models. The GTX 470M runs 288 visual processing cores, More >
Archos unwraps five Android-based media players, tablets

Archos today overhauled its device line almost entirely with five new Android models. All of them will ship with Android 2.2 and Flash 10.1 and support for tethering and hotspot sharing on the devices that use 3G. They also share certain minimum specs in common, including ARM Cortex A8 processors and 802.11n Wi-Fi.
The start is the Archos 28, a basic 2.8-inch media player with a 320×240 resolution, an 800MHz processor and 4GB or 8GB of storage; a 4GB version will cost $ 100. The Archos 32 upgrades to a larger 3.2-inch, 400×240 screen and supports HD playback. An 8GB More >
