Microsoft plans to sell 5 million Kinect units this fall

Microsoft is now expecting to sell 5 million Kinect sensors through the holiday shopping season. The revised forecast marks a significant jump from the company’s initial expectations, which called for shipments closer to 3 million units during the same time period.
“Presales have exceeded expectations,” said the head of Microsoft’s entertainment unit, Don Mattrick, in an interview with Reuters. “People are coming to us and saying this is must-have holiday item.”

RIM demos PlayBook at Adobe MAX, vows some free dev units

RIM at Adobe’s MAX conference today showed the first instance of the BlackBerry PlayBook running live. The demos showed a mix of both real and concept apps, including a concept health care app, HD video, Salesforce Chatter and SAP’s business tools like CIO Cockpit. All of the apps were shown running on Adobe AIR, which is now the official SDK for RIM’s new tablet.

TomTom Go Live 1000, future Magellan GPS units hit FCC

The FCC has leaked word of two new including the Magellan RoadMate 9020/9055 as well as TomTom’s Go Live 1000. More is known about the latter device, as it will be based on a WebKit interface, which is new for TomTom. It will sport a capacitative touchscreen, a magnetic mount and connected services such as real-time traffic updates.

Samsung hopes to crack 10% smartphone share, sell 25m units

Samsung hopes to break through the 10 percent mark in smartphone share by the end of 2010, the company’ mobile group head JK Shin said at the IFA show today [sub. required]. He was optimistic about Samsung’s success in light of the Galaxy S and explained that Samsung now expects to ship 25 million smartphones this year, up from an earlier prediction of 18 million. It may ship as many as 50 million smartphones in 2011.
