Toshiba unwraps 24nm flash memory in possible iPhone 5 clue
Apr 6th
Toshiba upgraded its NAND flash memory Tuesday night in a possible hint at the timing and features of the iPhone 5. Its new SmartNAND is based on a dense 24 nanometer process and allows flash chips up to 64GB for “media players, tablet PCs” and other devices. Along with being more space-efficient, the new design has a better memory controller that speeds up reads and writes.
All of the chips now have their own built-in error correction to take some of the work of guaranteeing accurate date away from a given device’s main processor.

Toshiba makes MacBook Air’s blade SSD available to all
Nov 8th
Toshiba tonight shared word that the special blade solid-state drive from the new MacBook Air will be launched for all computer builders, not just Apple. The Blade X-gale uses the same dimensions and is just an inch wide and 0.09 inches thick. The design is nonetheless as fast as many of the best full-size SSDs and can peak at 220MB per second in read speeds and 180MB per second in writes, a key to the Air’s near-instant response times.
The design comes in the same 64GB, 128GB and 256GB models that Apple uses; the 256GB capacity is an achievement for More >
11-inch MacBook Air teardown shows Toshiba SSD
Oct 22nd
An ongoing teardown of the new 11-inch MacBook Air by iFixit has discovered extra details beyond just what Apple showed during its own keynote. The ultraportable’s SSD was already known to be custom since none take up its very narrow shape, but the 64GB example here is now known to be entirely Toshiba-derived and uses the Japanese firm’s memory controller and four 16GB chips from the same firm. It won’t be user-replaceable but, at half the thickness and less overall area, is key to the system’s thin design.
Samsung and possibly Toshiba’s frequent flash memory partner SanDisk are rumored to More >
Toshiba shows previously unseen Android tablet
Oct 7th
Toshiba brought a new Android tablet to CEATEC that hasn’t been seen before, as it’s not the Folio 100. The device was brought to the show to demonstrate Toshiba’s Book-Place service for the Japanese market. There are no details on this feature, nor the tablet itself.
It is expected to get Android 2.2, however, and the photos do confirm the presence of a webcam. It is also believed that the device will ship with a touchscreen the size of around 10 inches and a resolution of 1024×600, suggesting it’s at least a close relative.
The Folio 100 has similar specs, More >
