RIM kicked off BlackBerry DevCon today with plans for its own mobile ad service in the vein of Apple’s iAd or Google’s AdMob. BlackBerry Advertising Service will give app writers access to multiple ad networks to subsidize free or cheap apps. Developers will get a similar 60 percent cut of any ad revenue, but RIM is hoping to avoid iAd-level control and will give the advertisers and ad networks direction over the creative presentation of apps.
Ads will only need “a few lines of code” to implement but will support both mixed media and HTML5 along with deep access to More >

Apple has regularly avoided attending third-party, platform-independent trade shows since Steve Jobs’ return. It first focused on outside but Apple-focused events and has gradually withdrawn to where it only hosts its own shows.

Apple’s iOS, meanwhile, has lost 11 percent over the same eight months and has a narrower lead at 56 percent.
RIM’s historically poor web browsing experience has kept it mostly flat, at nine percent.
The share has been helped by a string of successful Android phone launches first instigated by the original Motorola Droid last November. Since then, Verizon More >

Add-on battery maker Mophie will soon release another battery pack, this time for the iPhone 4. Engadget believes the accessory will arrive as soon as next week, priced at $ 79, or less than previous Mophie iPhone batteries. The newest product will reportedly double the iPhone 4′s battery life.
