AT&T to move most 3G sites to HSPA+, vows real 7Mbps speeds
Sep 16th
AT&T’s planned HSPA+ 3G upgrade will hit more areas and deliver much faster real-world speeds than expected, the company’s operations president John Stankey said in a presentation at a Bank of America/Merrill Lynch telecoms event today. Initially characterized as hitting only strategic locations, the faster service should now reach most areas and hit a practical 7Mbps speed when its network is unhindered. The benchmark is roughly in the middle of Verizon’s estimated 4G speeds, although its LTE-based hardware will give lower latency and higher peak speeds of 12Mbps.
Stankey also reiterated AT&T’s own LTE plans and said it should have More >

SD Association vows breakthrough 300MBps SD card speeds
Sep 5th
Following an announcement from Toshiba at IFA yesterday that it has developed SDHC memory cards based on the new UHS-1 standard, the SD Association today outlined its plans for its forthcoming SD 4.0 standard. The breakthrough means that SD 4.0 can support real-time HD video playback, whether from a media player or a camcorder. The new SD 4.0 standard is based on a dual-row pin memory design that achieves bus interface speeds of up to 300MBps, or nearly three times faster than UHS-1′s 105MBps.
Fully backwards compatible with any SD, SDHC and SDXC memory card capable device, the new high More >
