GameStop exec bashes Sony’s PSP strategy
Nov 10th
GameStop’s vice president of merchandising and marketing, Bob McKenzie, has criticized Sony’s business strategy for the PSP handheld. In an interview with Eurogamer, the executive pointed to a “disappointment” over the selection of PSP games that were released this year, compared to the higher number of games that arrived on the market last year.
“I think Sony did a great job two years ago in terms of coming out with a pretty good line-up of PSP offerings and I didn’t see that breadth of titles this year,” said McKenzie. “And it’s still pretty meaningful to consumers.”

Sony’s Google TV booted into recovery, opens door to hacks
Oct 24th
Sony’s Google TV Blu-ray player has been successfully booted into a hidden recovery mode after a discovery by a forum poster at Phandroid. Holding the power button for three seconds immediately after boot drops the player into a special mode with both common options to restore the OS but also a “system update with USB” choice. The finding could likely let users install their own updates with a flash drive and root or otherwise open the device up to unofficial features.
The Sony Internet TV may also work with the hack, but the exact method is likely to change.

Sony as promised tonight confirmed its Internet TV GT1 line, its first Google TV devices. The Internet TV and Internet Blu-ray Player build an Atom-based system into their designs and support the full Google OS for searching both the web and TV programming (including Flash-based video) as well as loading Android-based apps. Sony’s spin puts in an app for its Qriocity movie service as well as CNBC, Napster, NBA, Netflix, Pandora, Twitter and YouTube.

Leak: Sony’s Google TV prices much less expensive
Oct 11th
Sony’s GT1 Google TV line should cost significantly less than expected if a leak is true. The 46-inch NSX-46GT1 would cost just $ 1,399, not the $ 1,899 originally expected. Many of the earlier quoted prices would be “several hundred dollars less,” the Sony Insider source said.
The specifications for the Android-based sets themselves are still mostly unknown, other than that they will use a USB adapter for Wi-Fi and edge-based LED backlighting. At $ 1,399 for the largest set, it’s doubtful that any of the sets will support 3D or more than a 120Hz refresh rate.

Sony’s GT1 Google TV spied at Best Buy tech preview
Sep 28th
Best Buy during a holiday preview today inadvertently spoiled Sony’s Google TV launch through a demo of the set. The Bravia NSX-46GT1 has a 46-inch, edge LED display and uses a USB adapter to get on to Wi-Fi when Ethernet isn’t an option. It behaves like a reference Google TV device, HD Guru noted, and includes both the universal TV/web search and Chrome browsing; it has quick access to Amazon (likely VOD) and YouTube.
The black-and-white hued set will normally get directions from Sony’s own remote, although the session revealed that the concept of Android and iPhone remote control apps won’t More >
