Sharp exits PC business to focus on Android-based tablets

Sharp Japan has announced that it will cease to develop and manufacture notebook and desktop PCs. Although innovative designs such as the Mebius notebook and netbooks, which featured a touchscreen input in place of a traditional trackpad were reasonably well received by consumers, Sharp will instead focus on eBooks and tablets. It is calling the move ‘strategic’ and has not ruled out returning to the PC market in the future.

Sharp shows phone with 3D cameras, 3D displays

At the IFA expo kicking off tomorrow, Sharp will show off a cellphone with a glasses-free display and a camera that can capture 3D images. Pocket-lint received a sneak peek at the device, the back of which has two lenses, similar in fashion to the Fujifilm Real 3D W3 camera. The screen uses a lenticular lens, which, like that on the Nintendo 3DS’ main stcreen, won’t require glasses to produce a 3D effect.

New York sues LG, Samsung, more for LCD price fixing

New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo’s office has sued Sharp, LG Display, Hitachi and Samsung for allegedly price fixing LCD screens in a number of consumer electronics devices, the Wall Street Journal reported on Friday. The lawsuit filed in a Manhattan state court alleges that an illegal cartel took out competition and made secret decisions to boost prices and took steps to make the prices remain high.
