NPD: MacBook Pro goosed Apple sales 47% while PC rivals sank

New NPD data in a research note later on Monday from Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster suggested that the by Gartner and IDC, either of which saw it shipping as little as 9.6 percent more Macs in the US and no greater than 18.9 percent more.
Its fast rise could lead to a major upset in market share. Overall American computer shipments were expected to drop between 6.1 and 10.7 percent in the US. Most of it has been at Acer’s expense after it failed to treat the iPad seriously and eventually reorganized its business around competing more in non-PC hardware.

E-book sales triple, top paper as most popular format in US

The Association of American Publishers said late Thursday that e-books had surged and established a foothold as the most popular format for reading in the US. Results from February saw e-book sales triple from just a year ago to $ 90.3 million. The jump made it the most popular format for books in the US, outpacing paper in every category the AAP covers.

Sony announces global sales of 50 million Playstation 3s

Sony Computer Entertainment (SCE) today announced that the cumulative sales of its PlayStation 3 computer entertainment system has reached a milestone of 50 million units sold worldwide, as of March 29. SCE also announced that sales of the PlayStation Move have surpassed 8 million units worldwide as of April 3. First introduced back in November 2006, the platform now boasts 75 million registered users and tens of thousands of game, music video and movie downloads available through the Playstation Store.

Extra-long iPad 2 lineups lead to estimates of 500,000 sales

Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster saw headcounts from long iPad 2 lineups as a sign that Apple may have had breakthrough launch day sales. He believed 400,000 to 500,000 iPads had sold based on increases at multiple Apple stores, especially flagships. The lineup at the 5th Avenue store in New York City had 1,109 in line on opening versus 730 for the original iPad; Minneapolis’ Mall of America store more than tripled its lineup, from 105 to 334.

West coast Apple Stores begin iPad 2 sales

MacNN has received reports that a large lineup is forming outside the San Francisco Apple Store in the downtown district, swelling from an earlier estimate of 140 people (quoted by AppleInsider earlier today) now stretching over four city blocks in length. Sunny weather in the city has allowed customers wanting an iPad 2 to begin the traditional lineup later than their east coast counterparts, where it was still raining earlier in the day following a massive rainstorm Thursday night, with well over 500 people in line nonetheless.
