Roku goes into retail with Netgear-branded Roku XD Player
Oct 14th
Roku ventured beyond its online-only strategy tonight by launching its first media hub destined for retail. The Netgear Roku XD Player is identical to the regular Roku XD but will reach retail stores such as Best Buy that haven’t been in reach before. It supports full 1080p video from sources and streams Amazon VOD and Netflix at their native 720p, with 802.11n Wi-Fi and a buffer for instant rewind.
The involvement of a third-party also hasn’t altered software or most other features. To get the Roku XD into physical stores, Netgear is charging an extra $ 10 over Roku itself More >
Roku makes Hulu Plus official, touts edge over Apple
Sep 28th
Roku today landed a minor coup and confirmed the addition of Hulu Plus streaming to its media hub. The deal gives owners access to the same $ 10 service and its expanded show reach, including both ongoing seasons and an expanded back catalog. A channel for Hulu will reach all existing Roku hardware this fall.
The deal gives Roku an advantage over Apple in current TV shows, one which Roku was keen to flaunt in a chart (below). iTunes offers current shows in a similar timeframe to Hulu but has to charge per episode and can only offer its 99-cent More >
TiVo Premiere to also get Hulu Plus
Sep 28th
In sync with Roku’s plans, TiVo today said it would add Hulu Plus to the TiVo Premiere series. Both the regular and XL versions of the DVR will have the option of using the $ 10 subscription service. The update should roll out sometime over the “coming months.”
TiVo’s boxes have already had access to multiple Internet video services, such as Amazon VOD and Netflix, but have been limited to pay-per-download or else subscriptions to an older and usually restricted library of material. Hulu Plus gives access to TV shows just after their episodes first air as well as wider More >
Hulu Plus may come to Roku boxes
Sep 28th
Roku’s media boxes could soon get Hulu Plus access, StreamingMedia executive VP Dan Rayburn claimed on Monday. After allegedly getting a photo of the front end, two content partners said that a Hulu channel was coming. They didn’t say whether it would be the free service, though Hulu’s resistance to TV-friendly free use makes it more likely that a $ 10 Hulu Plus subscription is necessary.
The timing is still unknown, but the add-on was characterized as coming “soon.”
Hulu has promised to bring its Plus service to many more devices and already supports iPhones, iPads and Sony’s PS3, with Samsung and More >
