Toshiba drops OLED production in favor of LCD

Toshiba is dropping its OLED production plans, according to sources for Japan’s Nikkei BP. The newspaper claimed that there was more demand for LCD screens in mobile devices rather than OLEDs and that the electronics giant’s poor earnings made it difficult to sustain the organic displays. Research and development staff for OLEDs should be transferred to the LCD panel division instead.
The company won’t entirely give up on OLED development, according to the details, but would focus solely on lighting equipment. The original plan for the production line was to produce 1.5 million OLED smartphone screens each year. [via CrunchGear]
LG’s 31-inch OLED TV spotted, priced at IFA

LG as promised has been showing its 31-inch OLED TV at IFA today and has now detailed some of how it works and plans for a real launch. The organic 1080p screen is characterized as large and vivid but is also detachable from its stand. Unlike the XEL-1 and some conventional TVs, where a thin screen is permanently fixed to the stand, the LG set can be removed or rotated in place.
