India bans Nokia push e-mail
Apr 15th
The Indian government has ordered telecommunications providers not to launch Nokia’s proposed push e-mail service, the Economic Times reported on Thursday. The ban will last as long as a monitoring system is put into place to view the e-mails by security officials. The issue is similar to the drawn-out ordeal RIM faced in the country for its ultra-secure BlackBerry e-mail access to which the government couldn’t access.
The Ministry of Home Affairs made this request directly to the Department of Telecom. The move is part of a larger one where all telecommunications service providers will need to have systems in place More >
Nokia E6, X7 show early in official promo videos
Apr 11th
Nokia’s plans for an April 12 Symbian revival grew clearer on Sunday after British carrier 3 and Nokia itself posted briefly available videos (one of which is republished below) of the E6 and X7. The second device, spotted earlier by Nokia Blog, promises not just the known four-inch ClearBlack display and eight-megapixel camera but a newly revamped version of Symbian. The browser should be three times faster than it is in Symbian^3 devices like the N8, a 3 UK spokesman said in one clip, and it should also finally have a portrait ratio on-screen keyboard instead of requiring a switch More >
Nokia says Symbian now closed-source
Apr 8th
Nokia this week confirmed that its decision to take down online distributions of Symbian was actually the effective end to Symbian as an open-source platform. Although it republished the code this month, it has since said it the code was only under a closed-source license and couldn’t be legally used for any purpose without a commercial deal. The code was only online to help Japanese phone makers still using Symbian and to help existing platform partners, H Online was told.
The open-source version of Symbian still exists on an unofficial code dump page, but it includes only the code from before More >
Mystery Nokia T7-00 phone leaks in Ovi tools
Mar 27th
A discovery inside Nokia’s Ovi Publisher Tools has found what could be the start of a new phone series. The T7-00 would be the first Tseries phone but would start out with the same 360×640 resolution and Symbian^3 roots as other recent Nokia smartphones, like the E7 or N8. Mobilesguruji noted that little else was made public.
The appearance could signal a change in direction for Nokia if the early clues hold. It already has the C, E, N, and X ranges to cover basic, business, high-end and media smartphones. The Tseries would either replace one of these or venture into More >
ITC says Apple didn’t violate five Nokia patents
Mar 26th
Apple won a significant victory against Nokia on Friday after an International Trade Commission judge said in an initial ruling that Apple didn’t infringe on any of the five patents leveled against it in Nokia’s December 2009 patent dispute. The claims insisted that the iPhone, iPod and Macs at the time all copied Nokia’s wireless technology. Judge James Gildea’s decision wasn’t final and will have to be approved by the rest of the ITC on August 1 to be upheld.
Nokia has said it disagrees with the verdict but wants to see whether it will need to appeal.
The verdict doesn’t More >
