Sony Computer Entertainment (SCE) today announced that the cumulative sales of its PlayStation 3 computer entertainment system has reached a milestone of 50 million units sold worldwide, as of March 29. SCE also announced that sales of the PlayStation Move have surpassed 8 million units worldwide as of April 3. First introduced back in November 2006, the platform now boasts 75 million registered users and tens of thousands of game, music video and movie downloads available through the Playstation Store.

Estimate: Apple moved 1.1 million MacBook Airs in the fall

An estimate by Concord Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo this weekend suggested Apple may have had a blockbuster first quarter of sales for the redesigned MacBook Air. Asian supplier checks reportedly saw Apple ship about 1.1 million of the 11- and 13-inch systems, or 38 percent of Apple’s 2.9 million portable Macs. Kuo told AppleInsider he had previously estimated 700,000 systems shipping in a prediction just two days after they had been made public.

Microsoft plans to sell 5 million Kinect units this fall

Microsoft is now expecting to sell 5 million Kinect sensors through the holiday shopping season. The revised forecast marks a significant jump from the company’s initial expectations, which called for shipments closer to 3 million units during the same time period.
“Presales have exceeded expectations,” said the head of Microsoft’s entertainment unit, Don Mattrick, in an interview with Reuters. “People are coming to us and saying this is must-have holiday item.”

Apple’s 14.1 million iPhones crush BlackBerry in summer

Apple in its quarterly results revealed that it had blown past RIM in smartphone sales. The company’s 14.1 million iPhone shipments in the summer were enough for it to trump RIM’s 12.1 million BlackBerries over its own summer quarter, which finished a month earlier. The upset is one of the few seen since the iPhone went on sale, as Apple so far is only known to have passed RIM once early into the iPhone’s history.
