Nikon makes D5100 official with ISO 102,400 night video
Apr 5th
Nikon tonight brought out its long planned D5100. The camera has a brand new, 180 degree variable swiveling LCD with a sharp 921,000-pixel output and a 1,000:1 contrast ratio. Video is the same 1080p30 as on the D3100 and D7000, but a sensor tweak gives it a new Night Vision mode for very low light: it can record in ISO 102,400 to get the moment when seeing the shot is more important than the amount of noise.
The camera normally shoots in an ISO 100 to 6,400 sensitivity range with an override option to hit 25,600. Beginners get a new More >
Microsoft makes odd claim to IE9 as greenest browser
Mar 30th
Microsoft has staked an interesting claim regarding Internet Explorer 9, essentially labeling it the greenest browser. In an IEBlog post, the company graphed results from power consumption tests using IE9, Chrome 10, Firefox 4, Opera 11 and Safari 5. The first three browsers showed close numbers on an idle system, however IE9 achieved the lowest wattage when visiting a news site and running HTML5 applications.
For the news site comparison, IE9 shaved 33 minutes from the theoretical life of a 56Wh battery when running the browser on a blank page. Chrome 10 reduced the run time by 1:07 hrs, showing More >
Samsung makes Galaxy Tab 10.1 thinner to one-up iPad 2
Mar 22nd
In a game of one up-manship with Apple, Samsung has redesigned its original Galaxy Tab 10.1 to slim down its 10.9mm thickness. The iPad 2 handily beat that, at 8.8mm, but the redesigned Galaxy Tab 10.1 is now just 8.6mm thick. It also now matches the slightly smaller but equally new Galaxy Tab 8.9 in terms of thickness.
Samsung is now quick to call the new duo the world’s thinnest tablets. The new Galaxy Tab weighs 595 grams, or 125 grams more than the Galaxy Tab 8.9 and again just undercuts the iPad 2′s 603 gram weight.

OnStar names vehicle mirror kit FMV, makes small changes
Mar 17th
OnStar announced it will name its new mirror kit for vehicles other than GM’s FMV, or For My Vehicle. It will be bundled with an external microphone that is said to offer the “best” voice quality. The FMV will otherwise bring many of the same services the full-blown offering does in GM vehicles.
This includes Automatic Crash Response, which will connect users to an OnStart emergency advisor when a crash is registered by the built-in accelerometer. Emergency services can then be informed of the vehicle’s location. Turn-by-turn navigation is onboard with spoken directions to a destination spoken by the driver. More >
