RIM co-CEOs bemoan critics, admits BlackBerry may not lead
Apr 11th
RIM’s co-CEOs in an interview published Monday went on the defensive against critics of their performance in smartphones. Mike Lazaridis didn’t “fully understand” the reactions and instead wanted to steer people to high profits, growth, and international expansion that was taking the BlackBerry to 170 countries. The only answer was to “prove it over and over and over,” he told the New York Times.
His counterpart Jim Balsillie argued that market share alone wasn’t the issue and that RIM could thrive in the next five years just by continuing to grow and be successful. “You dont have to be all More >

Mar 12th
Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster saw headcounts from long iPad 2 lineups as a sign that Apple may have had breakthrough launch day sales. He believed 400,000 to 500,000 iPads had sold based on increases at multiple Apple stores, especially flagships. The lineup at the 5th Avenue store in New York City had 1,109 in line on opening versus 730 for the original iPad; Minneapolis’ Mall of America store more than tripled its lineup, from 105 to 334.
He acknowledged that the stores were a small sample but added that the much wider number of stores offering the iPad this More >

Japanese retailer Enterking has publicly announced it will not accept Nintendo 3DS gaming consoles that have been used in conjunction with a hacked memory card for trade-in. The retailer will know whether this happened or not because the portable gaming console logs all activity, which can then be retrieved by those in the industry. Nintendo is attempting to deter pirates with this undertaking.
The most common card is the R4, with some Japanese hackers already able to install illegal DS ROMS but not games. The fact the system keeps track of any hacks and has a Wi-Fi connection could also More >
Apple widens lead in satisfaction for computers, phones
Sep 8th
Apple today managed to hold on to and in some cases widen its lead in a reader-guided study of satisfaction with their computers and mobile devices. The company’s MacBooks led the way in PC Mag‘s studies with an overall score of 9.2; the figure was the highest in any category, not just notebooks, and kept it in front of ASUS’ 8.5. Most sat between 7.9 and 8.1, while HP’s Compaq label trailed the pack at 7.3.
The company’s reputation for portables was somewhat clouded by its repair rate, which at 15 percent was equal to Lenovo and HP. However, it More >
