HP posts webOS 2.1 SDK with Veer angle, hybrid apps

HP on Friday helped developers get started on next-generation webOS hardware with the webOS 2.1 SDK. The kit gives access to Exhibition for Touchstone-based apps, Just Type searches and direct Synergy hooks. Much of the emphasis is on the Veer, HP said; the 320×400 resolution is the same as that for the Pixi, making it possible to port apps from the tiny phone over to the faster, more advanced slider.

Lenovo confirms IdeaPad U1 Hybrid with LePad specs, prices

The Lenovo LePad tablet and its accompanying IdeaPad U1 Hybrid dock have been confirmed to arrive on the market in 2011, and the specs are now finalized. Introduced at last year’s CES, this year’s CES was host to the announcement. The slate-like, 10.1-inch LePad portion of the device runs on Android 2.2 and uses a 1.3GHz Snapdragon processor, while plugging in the tablet to the dock endows it with Windows 7 OS capabilities and processing power from an Intel CULV processor.

Gigabyte unveils Booktop desktop/tablet hybrid

Gigabyte Technology has introduced the Booktop T1125, a hybrid system that works as a tablet, notebook or desktop computer. The notebook/tablet portion features an 11.6-inch touchscreen panel, which swivels to expose a full-size keyboard. When the notebook is attached to the docking station, users can still view the 11.6-inch display or connect an external monitor.
The T1125 is powered by Intel’s ultra-low voltage (CULV) Core i5 or i3 processors, with support for NVIDIA Optimus technology. Other features include USB 3.0 ports, four speakers, HDMI output, and an optical drive on the docking station.

Seagate downplays SSD in MacBook Air, says hybrid the future

Seagate chief Steve Luczo talked down the effect of the new MacBook Air’s all-SSD mix this week in a question and answer session following its latest results. He acknowledged that the designs would be “obviously pretty competing” but noted that SSDs were still in the minority at Apple, which he estimated sold just five percent or less of its Macs with flash storage. He also reiterated common problems with SSDs, such as their high prices, low capacities and tendency to bog down over time as they fill up and lose efficiency.

Casio rolls H20G hybrid GPS, entry Z16 cameras

Casio grew its Exilim Zoom range by two today with both high-end and low-end models. At the top, the EX-H20G is its first with a full GPS system to geotag shots. The system takes a hybrid approach with both a true GPS receiver as well as motion sensors to estimate the position based on how far the photographer has moved from the last known position.
