At a Wednesday meeting with enterprise IT managers, Verizon Wireless revealed it will launch its 4G network in 30 NFL cities before year’s end. The high-speed network will be launched in remaining major US cities systematically until all are covered by 2013, said Verizon senior federal sales executive Bernie McMonagle. The major metropolitan areas are expected to be the 30 cities that are home to the 32 football teams in the NFL.

Qualcomm: iPad killed smartbooks, dual 1.5GHz in late 2011
Sep 8th
Qualcomm chief Paul Jacobs made remarks today indirectly acknowledging that the iPad had all but eliminated the smartbook category. During an event, he argued that tablets like Apple’s had displaced the smartbook category Qualcomm had been trying to make through devices like the Lenovo Skylight by achieving the same goal. A tablet fulfills the same role of a device with a persistent Internet connection and all-day battery life, he said.

Sprint today said that its launch of the Samsung Epic 4G was “one of the best” first-day releases in its history. The carrier wouldn’t provide figures but hinted it was prepared for the possibility of sellouts. The record came in spite of a higher $ 250 contract price.
The company has often been reluctant to provide data, but it’s likely the device’s results won’t compare to the HTC Evo 4G that has been hailed as Sprint’s turnaround device. Reports from various users still suggest no shortages of the Epic 4G, which is still available online; the Evo 4G sold out More >
Windows Phone 7 released to manufacturing, gets tweaks
Sep 2nd
Microsoft today said Windows Phone 7 had been released to manufacturing. The move gives phone makers a gold build of the mobile OS and also includes some important changes since a Technical Preview just weeks ago. Facebook now has a unique feature that will filter contacts to show only truly known contacts, and the People Hub now allows for a direct Facebook “like” or wall post.
Actual releases will still depend on individual phone designers, which have to finish tailoring certain parts of the OS to their devices. Microsoft has previously mentioned in an internal presentation that WP7 would ship More >
