HP CEO Mark Hurd, speaking at the Bank of America Merrill Lynch technology conference, claimed that his company’s decision to acquire Palm was not an attempt to enter the smartphone business. The executive suggests the move was primarily driven by a desire to obtain Palm’s portfolio of intellectual property (IP).
“We didn’t buy Palm to be in the smartphone business. And I tell people that, but it doesn’t seem to resonate well,” Hurd said. “We bought it for the IP. The WebOS is one of the two ground-up pieces of software that is built as a web operating environment.”
