Acer hopes to overtake Apple in tablets in 2-3 years

Acer CEO Gianfranco Lanci in a question and answer session after his tablet unveilings this week said that he hoped to beat Apple in the tablet market within two to three years. He expected Acer to get 10 to 20 percent of the field shortly after launch and to take the lead from the iPad later on. Apple’s problem was its US-centric focus, which could hurt it where Acer and others were more world oriented.

New group hopes to push standard PCIe-based SSDs

A newly-formed SSD Form Factor Working Group has been formed, with the aim of bringing out a PCI Express-based SSD standard. Made up of promoter members Dell, EMC, Fujitsu, IBM and Intel, the group will focus on enterprise customers who need ever-higher performance storage that is cost effective and easy to use. While PCIe based SSDs are available now, they aren’t simple and are usually reserved for servers, workstations and very high-end gamers.

Motorola hopes to invalidate Apple patents, shield Android

Motorola has quietly tried to fend off a countersuit from Apple by filing for a declaratory judgment against the iPhone maker. The Droid X creator wanted a Delaware court to find the patents in Apple’s lawsuits against HTC declared invalid as it believed not just that Motorola’s phones didn’t infringe but also that Apple was targeting Android as a whole and would likely sue Motorola next. The filing revealed that Motorola had been discussing a licensing deal but that talks had broken down, prompting Motorola’s own suit as a preemptive strike.
