Western Digital to snap up Hitachi GST for $4.3 billion

Western Digital said on Monday that it was buying Hitachi Global Storage Technologies for the equivalent of $ 4.3 billion. The move includes a combination of $ 3.5 billion in cash as well as shares worth about $ 750 million. The deal will see the WD name remain but see Hitachi GST’s CEO Steve Milligan join WD as president.

Hitachi makes 30 percent thinner touchscreen LCD

Japan’s Hitachi Displays is developing an touchscreen LCD for mobile devices that is just 1.5mm thick, or about 30 percent thinner that today’s displays. The touch panel layer was reduced from the 0.5mm thickness in traditional displays to just 0.1mm by eliminating the glass substrate and other materials from the design. The additional inherent noise emission that is a result of this will be handled by Hitachi’s touch control software, the company said.

New York sues LG, Samsung, more for LCD price fixing

New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo’s office has sued Sharp, LG Display, Hitachi and Samsung for allegedly price fixing LCD screens in a number of consumer electronics devices, the Wall Street Journal reported on Friday. The lawsuit filed in a Manhattan state court alleges that an illegal cartel took out competition and made secret decisions to boost prices and took steps to make the prices remain high.
