NVIDIA GeForce GTX 590 official, vies for graphics lead
Mar 24th
NVIDIA as it promised has launched the GeForce GTX 590 as its fastest-ever graphics hardware. The design mates two underclocked GTX 580 chips on one board and includes 1,024 visual processing cores, dual 384-bit memory buses and a total of 3GB of RAM spread across the two chips. It may also be as much as two times quieter than the Radeon HD 6990, since each chip now has its own vapor chamber cooling system and combined stop at 48dB of noise, even at full speed.
The hardware can still pair up in quad SLI mode by adding a second GTX More >
Sony updates VAIO E, F, L with new CPUs and graphics
Sep 27th
Sony quietly upgraded its PC lineup on Sunday with speed and option upgrades across a handful of its models. The VAIO E series gets most of the updates with options for the slightly faster 2.66GHz Core i5 580M and 2.53GHz Core i5 460M, as well as a new 2GHz Pentium dual-core option for budget build-to-order models. The EA and EB also now have options for Mobility Radeon HD 5650 video and 1080p displays to match, while every E series sees purple return as a color choice.
The VAIO F gets a visual performance upgrade through swapping out the GeForce GT More >
Intel says Larrabee graphics were “impractical”
Sep 21st
More light on the reasons behind Intel’s promised but shelved Larrabee discrete graphics platform have been revealed. At the Intel Developer Forum earlier this month, the company’s director of Graphics Architecture Tom Piazza said Intel faced a performance per watt issue trying to deliver what Larrabee promised.
“I just think it’s impractical to try to do all the functions in software in view of all the software complexity,” Piazza said. “Naturally a rasterizer wants to be fixed function. There is no reason to have the programming; it takes so little area for what it does relative to trying to code More >
AMD ships 4GB ATI FirePro V9800 graphics card
Sep 10th
AMD has revealed its newest workstation-class graphics card, the ATI FirePro V9800. It flaunts 4GB of GDDR5 RAM and 1,600 stream processors, while supporting maximum resolutions of 2,560×1,600 at 60Hz. The design is an evolution of the FirePro V8800, with double the RAM and improvements in power and efficiency.
There are otherwise six Mini DisplayPort outputs, with the connected displays driven by ATI EyeFinity. Support for DirectX 11, OpenGL 4.0 and ATI CrossFire Pro is ensured, and the card gets a 256-bit memory interface. The same Cyprus GPU is used as in the V8800, but it’s faster in this application More >
