UK finds that Google Street View violated local laws

Britain’s Information Commissioner has ruled that Google violated UK regulations when the search giant collected Wi-Fi data while canvassing the country to expand Street View imagery. Despite the ruling, Google does not face a fine unless it repeats such actions or fails to comply with an audit of its data protection methods.
“There was a significant breach of the Data Protection Act when Google Street View cars collected payload data as part of their wi-fi mapping exercise in the UK,” said Commissioner Christopher Graham.

Garmin cuts losses, formally quits smartphones

Garmin while discussing its summer fiscal results today confirmed that it was quitting the smartphone business. The company decided after considering its position that it “cannot reach the scale necessary” to compete with others in smartphones and was shutting down its efforts. Staff involved in research and development would be moved to the in-car GPS team and other areas where the company was still growing, it said.

Google settles Buzz privacy lawsuit, sets up privacy fund

Google today made public word that it had reached a settlement over accusations of privacy violations relating to Google Buzz. The search firm will cover the costs of the class action suit and has agreed to set aside $ 8.5 million for a privacy education fund to inform users about privacy risks online. Google denied any wrong in the case but agreed to better tell users about privacy in Buzz.

Google Docs to soon get cloud printing, device sync

A buried part of the Google Docs source code has signalled Google’s intentions to improve the web app, especially for mobile devices. The segment teases future plans to add “third party applications, cloud printers, and sync devices.” Google has already established its own programming standard to handle the task, Cloud Print, but hasn’t implemented it in a significant fashion so far.
