An anonymous official from Russia’s Kremlin on Saturday dismissed an FSB proposal to ban Gmail, Hotmail, Skype and possibly other services. The official disliked a set of attacks on a major Russian blogging site but didn’t believe the proposal, from the FSB security agency’s information lead Alexander Andreyechkin, was necessary. He didn’t explain to the AP support why or whether the statement was a sign the government would reject the FSB’s measure out of hand.
The proposal was ostensibly to get greater control over communications within Russia, since the services in question often have their servers outside of the country. Local More >

Google on Sunday accused the Chinese government a second time of hacking into Gmail accounts to suppress dissent. Over the past month, Chinese customers alone have had numerous problems sending or flagging messages. Activists were allegedly the main targets, but this time the attacks were deliberately obscured to make it seem as though it was a service glitch, Google’s response to Guardian inquiries said.
China had yet to officially respond to the accusations. In the past, the government has denied any involvement of its own, even after Google said it could trace the original attacks to a university China has regularly More >

Google on Tuesday said it was looking into a major issue that was preventing many Android users from downloading attachments in Gmail. Many of those using Gmail 2.3 can’t open the content regardless of the underlying Android version or the device. The issue can also appear for those with a recent Android phone where Gmail was already updated, such as the T-Mobile G2, but where an over-the-air update changed the Gmail version.
The issue doesn’t have a known cause and has frustrated even Google, which said it didn’t have an idea of the cause behind the flaw. It has taken More >

A software update for the HTC Evo 4G has just been released by Sprint. As outlined on Sprint’s support page, the 3.29.651.5 update will resolve issues related to synchronizing multiple Gmail accounts, a bug fix with editing events in the calendar and, most importantly, the limitation of the display operating at 30fps, though this isn’t reflected on the support page.
At the same time, the HTC Hero will benefit from a similar update that will fix the GPS reboot issue and slow dialer performance. It remains locked to Android 2.1 since its hardware can’t handle the resources of the newer More >

Rumors have been buzzing about since June, but Google just made it official — the company’s baking Google Voice calls right into Gmail today. Like the Google Chat text, voice and video chat integrated into the web-based email client in prior years, full phone calls will also be an option using VoIP technology from the Gizmo5 aquisition. Google’s demoing the “Call from Gmail” service for us in San Francisco this morning, and it’s looking like it’s not free, but fairly cheap — a product manager just called Paris for $ 0.02 a minute. Incoming calls pop up as a chat More >
