Samsung Galaxy S gets Android 2.3 in Europe

Samsung began making amends for long upgrade intervals with reports from users that it was pushing out Android 2.3 to some Galaxy S models. Europeans, including the Netherlands and multiple other countries, are being told of a new build when they sync the phone with Samsung’s Kies app on the PC. Early anecdotes from the XDA-Developers forum suggest the build is fast and lag-free.
Most are expecting the update to lead to an official source code release from Samsung that would let users load unofficial firmware.

TWC iPad app gets back Fox, Discovery as NBC goes ‘live’

Time Warner Cable started the weekend with word that it had recovered some of the channels for the TWCable TV iPad app (free, App Store) that it had lost to disagreements just weeks earlier. The streaming app now has Discovery’s namesake channel as well as Animal Planet and TLC. Fox News, FX, and National Geographic have also arrived along with Lifetime Real Women, Military History, Sundance Central, and Wedding Central.

Mystery BlackBerry Orlando shows, Bold Touch gets full specs

An image of a new BlackBerry handset, codenamed Orlando, has now surfaced on the web, thanks to N4BB. It will combine a fixed design with a hardware QWERTY keyboard with a touchscreen and bears a striking resemblance to the Sedona, the next Curve; it doesn’t appear to be identical, however. It’s likely to ship with OS 6.1 when it does arrive at an undisclosed date.

Zune HD gets official e-mail app 1.5 years later

Microsoft in a belated step has quietly brought out the first true e-mail app for the Zune HD. The official software gives the MP3 player checks for both Gmail and Windows Live mail as well as any mail account that uses a POP3 server for incoming messages. The app isn’t as full-featured as on Windows Phone 7 but lets users quickly mass-delete messages or filter by the folder or the status.
The app is free and live now in the Zune Marketplace either on the device or in the Windows-based Zune software.

Netflix Canada gets much-needed deal for Paramount movies

Netflix significantly boosted its presence in Canada on Monday. The movie streaming service said it had landed a multi-year deal to bring new movie and TV shows to the service’s streaming-only service in the country, covering about 350 titles that include more recent movies like Iron Man 2 and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. The agreement includes exclusive subscription TV rights to first-run movies and puts movies in the “premium pay TV window” for releases.
