AT&T denies claims Samsung Focus’ NoDo update disabled HSUPA
Apr 21st
Samsung Focus owners got into a dispute with AT&T on Thursday after claims that the recent NoDo update was disabling HSUPA upload speeds on the phones. Devices allegedly lost the option for theoretical peak 5.6Mbps speeds and were instead locked to the frequently sub-megabit speeds of a regular HSDPA connection, This Is My Next said. The feature has been turned off on most AT&T devices with the exception of the iPhone 4 and modems.

RIM: claims BlackBerry PlayBook rushed out aren’t ‘fair’
Apr 15th
RIM’s co-CEOs shot back at mixed early BlackBerry PlayBook reviews that savaged the tablet for the unfinished state of its software. The company’s Jim Balsille didn’t believe it was “fair” that people attacked the PlayBook for the lack of native e-mail, calendaring and other core apps. The device was perfectly usable by the roughly 60 million existing BlackBerry owners, he told Bloomberg, as they could bridge their phone to the PlayBook and check the information stored on the BlackBerry itself.
“A lot of the people that want this want a secure and free extension of their BlackBerry,” he argued.

Richard Stallman claims cellphones are tools of Big Brother
Mar 15th
Richard Stallman, founder of the Free Software Foundation and the man behind the GNU operating system in the 1980s, now says he doesn’t have or carry a cell phone. “It’s Stalin’s dream. Cell phones are tools of Big Brother,” he said in an interview with NetworkWorld. “I’m not going to carry a tracking device that records where I go all the time, and I’m not going to carry a surveillance device that can be turned on to eavesdrop.”
Stallman believes in freedom through technology, but only if the software is free, or allows the user to use, modify and distribute More >
Popular developer claims Android more profitable than iOS
Mar 9th
Despite the broader reach of Apple’s App Store compared to the Android Market, some developers have reported more success selling apps on Google’s mobile platform. Spacetime Studios, a developer that offers popular apps through both avenues, claims that it consistently observed much higher user activity on Android.
The company’s Pocket Legends app, a MMO game, is said to be downloaded approximately 9,000 times each day on the Android Market, while the iOS counterpart only averages 3,000 to 4,000 daily downloads, according to a Computerworld report.
As expected, the download numbers equate to a significant difference in revenue from each platform. Android users More >
Oracle claims Google ‘directly copied’ Java in Android
Oct 28th
Oracle has amended its lawsuit against Google to overtly accuse the company of stealing code for Android. The initially vague complaint was changed Wednesday to charge Google with having “directly copied” several parts of code outright. About a third of the Java APIs used by developers are also “derivative” of ones Oracle uses, the updated suit read.
Among the elements under dispute were programming components as simple as class libraries and names as well as definitions and parameters. Even the documentation was similar, Oracle said.
Google hadn’t publicly responded to the latest changes, but it has previously responded by accusing Oracle More >
