Apr 7th
Google’s plans to support Chrome OS tablets were more tightly defined Thursday after discoveries showed touch elements having arrived in just the past few weeks. The browser now reports itself as “CrOS Touch” for sites that have specific touchscreen elements. An on-screen keyboard has appeared in earnest, and areas like the new tab page have been optimized both to provide more space for fingers and to be “reflowed when rotated (like iPad),” Google said.
The company has long admitted that it was working on Chrome OS for tablets and even had concept renders (pictured) of what it should look like More >

A pair of rumors from a historically accurate source have Sony planning two ultraportable VAIOs, one of which could be its direct answer to the MacBook Air. When docked, however, the system seen by Sony Insider would turn into a full desktop replacement with a Radeon HD 6700M (Whistler-XT), a Blu-ray burner, and full expansion with Ethernet, VGA, and a unique connector that merges USB with AC power.

Google’s VP of engineering for Chrome Linus Upson in an interview late Wednesday called out his company’s plans to expand Chrome OS beyond netbooks. The web app platform was designed for traditional compute design, he acknowledged, but it had the potential to be an alternate to Android on small-sized devices and Google TV on very large screens. It would eventually have touch since tablets are also in the long-term plans, Upson told the New York Times.
“We are starting with laptops and we will expand in both directions,” he said.
The statements directly contradict those of CEO Eric Schmidt, who at More >

Oct 11th
Google’s Chrome OS may be out in full featured form in about a month’s time, according to bug comments that indicate the code is in Release Candidate status. This is a sure showing that the OS is nearing finalization, and the most recent build has been identified as a near-ready 0.9.78.1. Another hint is a Google employee’s mention of a November 11 date when asked about a specific feature of the OS in a Google code thread.
November 11 could be the deadline for the product, with shipping scheduled shortly thereafter, possibly within a week. This would put the release More >
