NPD says Blu-ray, DVD videos still dominate over digital

The NPD Group in a new study suggested that Internet video had done little to dislodge Blu-ray and DVD as the dominant forms for movies. About 78 percent of the money spent on watching at home in the US was spent on one of the two disc formats exclusively while 15 percent were spending it on a hybrid service with both Internet and physical rentals, like Netflix. The remaining seven-plus percent accounted for every other digital and pay-per-view service combined, including iTunes, Amazon Instant Video, and cable or satellite watching.

Tiny new Panasonic DVR has Blu-ray, hard drive

Panasonic Japan has just introduced what it says is the smallest DVR with both a Blu-ray writer and a hard drive. Dubbed DIGA DMR-BF200, the device can record to its internal 320GB hard drive or burn BD-R or BD-RE discs. The DVR weighs less than 5lbs and is well under a foot wide and long, while just under 2.6 inches thick.

Sony’s Google TV-powered GT1 TV, Blu-ray player official

Sony as promised tonight confirmed its Internet TV GT1 line, its first Google TV devices. The Internet TV and Internet Blu-ray Player build an Atom-based system into their designs and support the full Google OS for searching both the web and TV programming (including Flash-based video) as well as loading Android-based apps. Sony’s spin puts in an app for its Qriocity movie service as well as CNBC, Napster, NBA, Netflix, Pandora, Twitter and YouTube.

Toshiba intros first 3D Blu-ray player

Toshiba has introduced its first 3D Blu-ray player, the BDX3100KB, along with a new entry-level 2D Blu-ray player, the BDX1100KB. The 3D model supports 1080p 3D content connected to a TV via HDMI, while 7.1-channel audio can be transmitted in Dolby TrueHD or DTS HD Master Audio Essential formats.
Aside from Blu-ray discs, the BDX3100 also supports a wide range of additional media formats. Users can also enjoy MKV, DivX, HD-JPEG, AVCHD and MP3 files loaded onto a USB stick.
