UAE to block small-scale BlackBerry BES access
Apr 17th
The United Arab Emirates detailed on Saturday how it would strike its balance with RIM on BlackBerry security. The Middle Eastern state will allow BlackBerry Enterprise Server (BES) access only for companies and groups that have 20 or more accounts. Individuals and smaller groups will have to go without, but everyone will have access to the usual BlackBerry Internet Services such as the web, e-mail, and BlackBerry Messenger.
It’s not clear if the move involved putting any RIM servers inside the UAE. Security officials had been concerned that they couldn’t easily intercept data since much of it was centralized at More >
RIM: claims BlackBerry PlayBook rushed out aren’t ‘fair’
Apr 15th
RIM’s co-CEOs shot back at mixed early BlackBerry PlayBook reviews that savaged the tablet for the unfinished state of its software. The company’s Jim Balsille didn’t believe it was “fair” that people attacked the PlayBook for the lack of native e-mail, calendaring and other core apps. The device was perfectly usable by the roughly 60 million existing BlackBerry owners, he told Bloomberg, as they could bridge their phone to the PlayBook and check the information stored on the BlackBerry itself.

Early BlackBerry PlayBook reviews: good idea, half-finished
Apr 14th
The first wave of BlackBerry PlayBook reviews has emerged and suggested that RIM’s first tablet had been rushed to market too soon. Its already known missing (though coming) onboard e-mail and messaging clients were seen as glaring omissions, but it was clear RIM had numerous major apps that were promised later, including video chat, photo sharing, and emulators for BlackBerry phone apps plus Android. David Pogue in his review for the New York Times found that RIM was in a “feverish daily revision” even days before launch and would have a hard time convincing early buyers.
“For now, the PlayBooks motto More >
RIM co-CEOs bemoan critics, admits BlackBerry may not lead
Apr 11th
RIM’s co-CEOs in an interview published Monday went on the defensive against critics of their performance in smartphones. Mike Lazaridis didn’t “fully understand” the reactions and instead wanted to steer people to high profits, growth, and international expansion that was taking the BlackBerry to 170 countries. The only answer was to “prove it over and over and over,” he told the New York Times.
His counterpart Jim Balsillie argued that market share alone wasn’t the issue and that RIM could thrive in the next five years just by continuing to grow and be successful. “You dont have to be all More >
Mystery BlackBerry Orlando shows, Bold Touch gets full specs
Apr 11th
An image of a new BlackBerry handset, codenamed Orlando, has now surfaced on the web, thanks to N4BB. It will combine a fixed design with a hardware QWERTY keyboard with a touchscreen and bears a striking resemblance to the Sedona, the next Curve; it doesn’t appear to be identical, however. It’s likely to ship with OS 6.1 when it does arrive at an undisclosed date.
The same source also showed off a number of spec sheets for the the BlackBerry 9900 Dakota. It’s now known to be powered by the 1.2GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon MSM8655. There is also 768MB of RAM More >
