Microsoft reworking Bing Maps 3D control plug-in for HTML5
Nov 3rd
Microsoft has announced that it will no longer continue to invest in its Bing Maps 3D control plug-in, which allows users to access “Bird’s eye” views using Silverlight. The functionality is not being dropped entirely, but rather reworked using HTML5 and AJAX for cross-compatibility on Bing.com/maps without requiring users to download a dedicated plug-in.
Amid reports that Microsoft is moving in a larger shift toward HTML5 instead of Silverlight, the company was careful to update its original blog post to clarify that 3D Maps is not based on Silverlight and the announcement “has nothing to do” with the commitment to More >
HTC Merge manual leak confirms forced Bing, CDMA/GSM support
Oct 1st
Most remaining doubts about the HTC Merge were cleared today after a leak of the phone’s manual. The device is now confirmed to have mandatory Bing support like the Samsung Fascinate and will ship with Android 2.2 from the start. Hardware details are sparing in the Droid-Life tip but prove that it will support both Verizon’s CDMA as well as GSM for roaming.
The phone likely wont’t be badged as a Droid device but should still be one of Verizon’s higher-end phones with a 1GHz or possibly 1.2GHz processor. At least a five-megapixel camera and 720p video recording are likely given More >
LG Optimus One due for T-Mobile, to hit Verizon with Bing
Sep 24th
LG is now known to be planning a multi-carrier launch for the Optimus One across the US as a pair of leaks have helped confirm the electronic giant’s plans. A marketing sheet sent to TmoNews shows the phone coming just as the Optimus. Besides using T-Mobile’s native 3G, the phone may be one of the first Android phones to support UMA and could make voice calls over Wi-Fi.
In sync with the news, a second shot has been obtained by Engadget that shows the Verizon edition, the Vortex, using the default Bing search widget that has been forced on to the Samsung More >
Microsoft posts Bing app for Android
Aug 31st
Microsoft today posted one of its rare contributions to Android today with word of Bing for Android. The search app closely mirrors the iPhone version and supports images, maps, movie showtimes and other specialties. It likewise uses spoken search for hands-free requests, even for complex searches such as flight schedules.
The app is free and available in Android Market but is currently restricted to Verizon phones. More networks are likely in the future but weren’t confirmed today.
Despite Microsoft’s clear competition with Google, it has said it plans to develop Android apps whenever cross-platform reach is important and earlier this year put More >
Microsoft may slash jobs on Wednesday
Jul 7th
A late-breaking scoop from within Microsoft has revealed that the company is close to cutting jobs as soon as Wednesday. The headcount lost isn’t known but wouldn’t be as large-scale as with the over 5,800 jobs cut at the lowest point of last year’s economic crash. They come after the end of Microsoft’s fiscal year in June and would partly reflect a shift in product focus.

Those speaking to TechFlash couldn’t discern which divisions were most likely to be hit by any staff reductions, although they did note that Microsoft would keep hiring in other areas.
