Intel used its opportunity at the Computex show to provide a major upgrade to the Atom platform, starting with its first dual-core mobile Atom processors. The 1.6GHz N455 and 1.83GHz N475 have similar clock speeds to their ancestors but are much faster for netbooks or other portables with an OS that supports multiple cores. They don’t use significantly more power than single-core Atoms, however, and could give an immediate speed boost without necessarily hurting battery life.
To show off the new Atom hardware, Intel has created a concept netbook design known as Canoe Lake: the design uses advanced (but More >
Marvell making Android tablet for mystery customer
May 25th
Marvell today at the Netbook Summit showed a mystery 10-inch tablet. The aluminum-shelled slate would be based on the company’s Moby reference design and would combine Android 2.1 with Marvell’s high-speed Armada 610 processor. Little else is clear about the design, but it would have space for a front camera.

The design is fully intended for production for another company, but the customer for the tablet is being kept secret. Marvell wouldn’t allow the unit to be turned on at the risk of giving away the identity. A ship date and a price are consequently off limits, but the Moby More >
Foxconn's Tegra 2 tablet a "generation ahead" of iPad
May 21st
NVIDIA tonight showed a reference tablet design that it hows shows the potential of its dual-core Tegra 250 chipset. The design, made by Foxconn, should be a “generation ahead” of the iPad as it runs at the same 1GHz clock speed but uses a newer ARM Cortex-A9 architecture that’s theoretically 25 percent more powerful per core than the iPad’s Cortex-A8. The design has about 1GB of RAM, or four times as much as Apple’s tablet.

While its screen and overall profile are smaller than the iPad at 8.9 inches, the design is compact enough inside to carry a front camera More >
