Analysts: Apple must make Verizon iPhone to blunt Android
Sep 15th
Apple has to make the iPhone available for Verizon and other carriers if it wants a chance at competing with Android, Bernstein Research analysts Pierre Ferragu and Toni Sacconaghi urged on Wednesday. Noting that Google has tripled its growth to 200,000 activations per day in just seven months, the bankers called Apple to make the iPhone available for the carriers that have become safe havens for Android, including not only Verizon but also O2 and Vodafone in Germany, China Mobile and Japan’s NTTDoCoMo. If it doesn’t happen, Android’s total installed based could overtake Apple’s in about 15 months, Bernstein wrote. More >
Apple rushing FaceTime-equipped iPad for the holidays?
Sep 11th
Apple may be stepping up the release of a camera-equipped iPad to get it out ahead of time, sources claimed on Friday. Although it only just launched in April and supplies have just caught up to demand, AppleInsider understood from a “proven” contact that the tablet was in late testing. If finished on time, it could be ready as soon as the holidays but would arrive no later than the first quarter of 2011, which ends in March.
Why Apple would update early aren’t known, but it’s speculated that FaceTime itself may play a role. It would give the company a More >
Apple widens lead in satisfaction for computers, phones
Sep 8th
Apple today managed to hold on to and in some cases widen its lead in a reader-guided study of satisfaction with their computers and mobile devices. The company’s MacBooks led the way in PC Mag‘s studies with an overall score of 9.2; the figure was the highest in any category, not just notebooks, and kept it in front of ASUS’ 8.5. Most sat between 7.9 and 8.1, while HP’s Compaq label trailed the pack at 7.3.
The company’s reputation for portables was somewhat clouded by its repair rate, which at 15 percent was equal to Lenovo and HP. However, it More >
Apple only computer maker not lowering notebook orders?

Apple appears to be the only company immune from a falloff in notebook shipments for the month of July, according to a report from Digitimes Research senior analyst Joanne Chien. HP is said to be the hardest hit, with notebook shipments expected to reach only 39.5 million units by the end of the year. The company had set a goal of 45-47 million units.
The report echoes a recent investor note, published by UBS analyst Maynard Um, that pointed to slow sales in most retail outlets. The only heavy traffic was seen at Apple Stores as students sought Macs for More >
Plex to integrate with LG TVs as “free” Apple TV alternative
Sep 5th
Plex at IFA has revealed that its media front end is being integrated into new LG TVs and Blu-ray players. Any Internet-capable devices made in 2011 will access an online version of Plex. Although they won’t have the usual local storage, they will recognize any Plex Media Servers on the local network and share their content much like the Mac and iOS clients.
The firm added that it saw Plex as a cheaper and possibly better alternative to an Apple TV. Although it requires the cost of LG hardware, Plex on these devices is effectively “free,” co-founder Elan Feingold said: More >
