Acer reorgs focused on mobile, tablet forecasts kept high

Acer CFO Tu Che-min and Chairman JT Wang on Friday outlined a consciously mobile-oriented focus for restructuring in the wake of the forced departure of its CEO Gianfranco Lanci the day before. It would name a new president before the end of April that would focus primarily on smartphones and tablets. The overall switch away from Acer’s traditional computer business would require more spending on research and development, Che-min said.
Company representative Henry Wang added that the emphasis would be on being profitable rather than on the emphasis on sheer market share.

Acer CEO resigns suddenly amid conflict with board

Acer CEO and President Gianfranco Lanci has resigned with immediate effect according to a press release issued by the company on its global website. The shake up has resulted in Acer Chairman J.T. Wang moving in as interim CEO. In surprisingly candid remarks, the companys press release states that, Lanci held different views from a majority of the board members, and could not reach a consensus following several months of dialog.
Further, Acer added that differences stemmed from an inability to agree on the, scale, growth, customer value creation, brand position enhancement, and on resource allocation and methods of implementation. More >
Acer: PC makers can weather Japan quake effect for 3 months

PC makers can weather the supply chain interruption that eventuated due to the Japan earthquake and tsunami, according to a report. Acer president of Taiwan operations Scott Lin says that the PC industrys upstream supply inventory is good for 2.5 to 3 months. This represents a minimal disruption to operations. However, some companies are stockpiling inventory, which has resulted in increased prices for certain components including DRAM and LCD panels.
Other components that are experiencing shortages coming out of Japan include silicon wafers and panel conductive adhesives. Acer has stated that it monitoring the situation, but is not necessarily concerned. More >
Acer hopes to overtake Apple in tablets in 2-3 years

Acer CEO Gianfranco Lanci in a question and answer session after his tablet unveilings this week said that he hoped to beat Apple in the tablet market within two to three years. He expected Acer to get 10 to 20 percent of the field shortly after launch and to take the lead from the iPad later on. Apple’s problem was its US-centric focus, which could hurt it where Acer and others were more world oriented.
Apple’s iPad sales had also tapered off over the past few weeks, he told Digitimes, without providing evidence.
