Apple tonight made clear its stance on the Library of Congress’ decision to legally sanction jailbreaking under the DMCA. The company didn’t contest the legality itself but said it would still break the warranty by going beyond what Apple can support. It also stressed that it saw the experience as hurting the experience for some by taking away the speed and reliability they may have expected.
“Apple’s goal has always been to insure that our customers have a great experience with their iPhone,” the Cult of Mac was told by a spokeswoman. “And we know that jailbreaking can severely degrade the experience.”
The representative wouldn’t directly confront the question of whether Apple would try to sue anyone who would sell jailbreaking tools, but she emphasized Apple’s history and that it hadn’t done so before.
Monday’s Library ruling doesn’t require that Apple or other companies must allow third-party apps in their code but also prevents these firms from legally challenging any jailbreak developed for the purposes of running an app or for unlocking access to other customers. It’s unclear whether the new exemptions would allow commercial development of jailbreaking apps; such software would be designed for a profit, but it it would still be used for individual purposes in most cases.

Samsung has dropped clues as to the launch of the Epic 4G through a schedule for its demo videos. Sprint’s 4G version of the Android phone is slated to get a video presentation on August 20. As both the related AT&T Captivate and T-Mobile Vibrant had their videos posted virtually in sync with the actual launch, the posting implies the Epic 4G may be ready on or near the August 20 timeframe.
Sprint often prefers to make phones available on a Sunday, so the actual ship date may be August 22.
The Epic 4G’s delay beyond the other versions hasn’t been explained by Samsung or Sprint, but its use of WiMAX and the slide-out QWERTY keyboard make it much different than any other Galaxy S. It primarily shares the Super AMOLED screen, 1GHz processor and five-megapixel camera.

Panasonic’s plans to unveil a 3D camcorder appear to have been confirmed this weekend as Panasonic has posted a placeholder for the device itself. The HDC-SDT750 resembles a traditional camcorder but has a special conversion mount to introduce stereoscopic 3D. It should capture in 1080p AVCHD (H.264) at 60FPS, although the frame rate implies it might drop to 30FPS for 3D.
The SDT750K should be made public sometime this week, but the camera isn’t likely to ship until some weeks later and will only come in black. A fast image processor and the 3D lens kit will likely put the price at a significant premium above a 2D equivalent.
